Stop 1: Kure and the Yamato Museum

Access

Yamato Museum
Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Located in the historic naval city of Kure, this museum showcases Japan’s maritime and shipbuilding history.

Highlights:

  • Massive 1:10 scale battleship Yamato model
  • Naval engineering exhibits
  • Excellent historical displays

Even if you’re not interested in military history, it’s surprisingly impressive.

Recommended stay: 1–2 hours


Stop 2: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Area

Back to Hiroshima Station, then take the tram.

Approx. 20 min from Hiroshima Station / ¥240

A peaceful riverside memorial dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombing.

■ Atomic Bomb Dome

One of Japan’s most important historical landmarks.
Seeing it in person is much more powerful than seeing photos.

■ Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
Opening Hours: 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM

Highly recommended.
The exhibits are emotionally heavy but incredibly important.

Recommended stay: 1–2 hours


Stop 3: Miyajima

Access

Hiroshima Station → Miyajimaguchi Station
JR San’yō Main Line
30 min / ¥420

Ferry to Miyajima
10 min / ¥200

Total travel time from Hiroshima Station: about 1 hour

Before boarding the ferry, stop by:

Anagomeshi Ueno

Their famous conger eel rice bowl is a Hiroshima classic.

Price: around ¥2,800

Expensive, but excellent.

■ Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine

One of Japan’s most iconic shrines.
Built over the water, it appears to float during high tide.
At low tide, you can walk close to the giant torii gate.

Things to enjoy

  • Shrine visit
  • Street food
  • Grilled oysters
  • Beer
  • Friendly deer

Recommended stay: 2–3 hours

If you only have limited time, prioritize Miyajima over other stops.


Stop 4: Iwakuni

Access

Miyajimaguchi → Iwakuni Station

23 min / ¥330

Bus to bridge
Approx. 15 min / ¥300

■ Kintaikyo Bridge

Kintaikyo Bridge

One of Japan’s three most famous historic bridges.
Its five wooden arches make it incredibly photogenic.

Recommended stay: 30–60 min

If you’re short on time, this is the easiest stop to skip.

Highway bus:
Approx. 50 min / ¥950

🥢 Dinner near Hiroshima Station

After a full day of moving nonstop, a seafood dinner near Hiroshima Station is the perfect finish.
There are many affordable local restaurants around the station.

🗼 Return to Tokyo

Departure: 8:20 PM
Arrival: next morning


👛 Total Cost

Overnight bus (round trip): ¥10,000–20,000
Local transport: ¥4,000–4,500

💡 Is This Itinerary Worth It?

Recommended for:

  • Fast-paced travelers
  • Photography lovers
  • People short on time

Not recommended for:

  • First-time Hiroshima visitors
  • Travelers who prefer slower trips

✔ Better Alternative

If possible, stay one night in Hiroshima.

Recommended:

Day 1: Kure + Hiroshima City
Day 2: Miyajima + Iwakuni

This makes the trip far more enjoyable.


🧠 Final Thoughts

This Hiroshima 1-day itinerary is absolutely possible.

But it’s intense.

If you’re willing to move quickly, it’s an unforgettable way to see Hiroshima’s major highlights in a very short time.
